Christianity vs. Mormonism

Galatians 1:6-9

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently, some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!

History of Mormonism

Mormonism emerged over 1,800 years after Jesus Christ, starting with Joseph Smith who founded “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

1805 Joseph Smith was born.

1820 God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, appeared to Joseph Smith.

1823 The angel Moroni first appeared to Joseph Smith.

1827 Joseph Smith received the golden plates.

1829 Joseph Smith completed the Book of Mormon translation.

1829 The Aaronic and Melchizedek Priesthoods were restored.

1830 The Book of Mormon was published.

1844 Smith was thrown in jail for destroying printing presses.

1844 June 27, 1844, a mob broke into Smith’s jail cell and killed both him and his brother.

Joseph Smith died at the age of 38 years old as a criminal.

Mormonism Statements & beliefs

  • Joseph Smith wrote himself in Genesis 50:27-33, which does not exist in any manuscripts ever. Genesis 50 ends with verse 26.

  • Many followers of the Mormon cult have also attempted to predict Jesus’ Second Coming, just like the Jehovah’s Witnesses have for hundreds of years.

    • Matthew 24:36-39 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.”

  • Josphen Smith is believed to have had between 30 and 40 wives. Mormons believe polygamy was a divine commandment Joseph Smith received. Many of Smith's wives were already married to other men, and some were as young as 14.

    • 1 Timothy 3:2a “Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife.”

  • Jesus established His Church 2,000 years ago from Jerusalem through The Apostles He chose, and the New Testament was completed in the first century, less than 60 years after His Resurrection.

    • Matthew 28:18-20, “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

    • Galatians 1:6-8, “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!”

  • Smith was a false prophet because his teachings contradict and add to the core doctrines of the Bible.

For example, Smith claimed that God the Father and Jesus Christ are separate, distinct beings with physical bodies, contradicting the Christian doctrine of the Trinity (the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as one God).

    • Deuteronomy 18:20-22 “But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.” 21 You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?” 22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed.”

    • Deuteronomy 13:1-5 “If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a sign or wonder, 2 and if the sign or wonder spoken of takes place, and the prophet says, “Let us follow other gods” (gods you have not known) “and let us worship them,” 3 you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul. 4 It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him. 5 That prophet or dreamer must be put to death for inciting rebellion against the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery. That prophet or dreamer tried to turn you from the way the Lord your God commanded you to follow. You must purge the evil from among you.”

  • “I have more to boast of than ever any man had; I am the only man that ever has been able to keep a whole church together since the days [HC 6:408] of Adam; a large majority of the whole have stood by me: neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as me; the followers of Jesus ran away from him; the latter-day saints never ran away from me yet…” (History of the Church, Vol. 6, p. 26 May 1844 • Sunday)

  • Psalm 139:13-14 “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

  • The Gospel is that you are saved by Grace by what Jesus Christ has done for us in our place for our sins.

    • Ephesians 2:8-10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

  • The Book of Mormon asserts that ancient battles and civilizations occurred in upstate New York less than 400 years ago.

It’s not possible for large, advanced civilizations, as described in the Book of Mormon, to have existed in the Americas without leaving substantial archaeological evidence.

  • Mormons believe that ancient civilizations in the Americas were home to people described in the Book of Mormon. Specifically, they believe that a group of Israelites led by a prophet named Lehi left Jerusalem around 600 B.C., migrated to the Americas, and their descendants formed great civilizations over the next 1,000+ years. The record ends around 400 A.D. with the destruction of these societies.

There is no historical or archaeological evidence to support the existence of the civilizations described in the Book of Mormon, such as the Nephites, Lamanites, Jaredites, and related events. No cities, ruins, writings, coins, monuments, crops, animals, etc. mentioned in their book have been found.

    • 1 Timothy 4:1 “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.”
